Recall? On all models with Reverse

Well the full story i was told by my local service dept is ,the unit will be disabled as the engineering dept have not yet produced the remedy to the problem , when this is announced the unit will be repaired even if you go out of warranty , there was no mention whatsoever about compensation , so i will broach that when i take my bike in . Could be of course that the staff have been told not too mention compensation unless it is broached by the customer .
Fix by Christmas, early to mid January at the latest (according to BMW Australia)
 
I called to have my headlamp fixed under warranty (22 R18 TC), found out about the recall for it, as well as for the reverse gear from my local dealer. They said there's a concern of moisture getting into...something related to reverse, so the fix is to disable the reverse function/gear until BMW comes up with a fix.
That being said, I've had zero issues with reverse over the 18 months I've had the bike.
 
Seems BMW might be on to those of us that may wish to reinstate the reverser after its mandated disconnect - At least in Australia. Mine had both cable 2 and 3 removed. Cable 2 is easy - make a new one and connect it. Cable 3 however, goes to the wiring harness (somewhere). Nigh on impossible to work out where. As for Cable 4 - haven't bothered to remove the cover to see if it's been removed or not. If anyone has any idea's I am all ears...

Cable No. 3 is a Ground connection between the Reverse Control module and the Transmission Case; there are two Ground landing points on the transmission case.

You'll need to remove both bolts securing the footing bracket (pegs or floorboards) and the gear shift axle, so that you can maneuver the assembly in order to get to the Ground screw with an extended Torx tool.

I agree 100%, it is a little difficult, but absolutely achievable..
 
Outside of the diagram already provided earlier, which mostly covers the wiring of the Reverse Control Module (Terminal 3 - Ground); the below image shows the Ground landing point No. (4) on the Transmission housing, which needs to be secured (8 Nm).

As I mentioned earlier, I had to remove the Gear Shift floorboard bracket that bolts into the frame, and the Starter - Reverser Engine Cover in order to expose and gain access to the Torx screw which secures the Ground Terminal. NOTE: I had to use a six inch extension for the Torx bit. I remember seeing two Ground landing points when I was working on my Model B, as depicted below as Landing Points No. (3) & No. (4); you will land the Ground cable from the Reverse Control Module on Landing Point No. 4. and tighten to (8 Nm).

Below is an actual picture, showing the 12 Volt DC terminal landing point, as well as the "hard-to-get" Ground cable and the landing point on the Transmission housing; you're going to need a Torx with an extension in order to get to the Torx screw:

This is the first I'm seeing of anything in the US around a reverse recall. The BMW recall site only shows the active recall for the headlight on my B (impacts the TC also). Maybe something coming down the line, but nothing officially put up through BMW that I can find.
I just had my 2023 R18B serviced and they informed me after the fact that there is a recall on the reverse gear and they deactivated it on my bike without first telling me (not happy) . It was a big selling feature to have this.... any word on timing for fix from anyone?
 
We're hearing late Dec, early Jan, but I don't know how reliable anyone's sources are. Official letters haven't even been received yet, as far as I'm aware, so there are likely a bunch of US riders, especially in the north, who won't even be able to get the bike in to have the reverse disabled before the actual fix is available.

Did they offer you a $1,000 compensation credit towards new R18 accessories that you have had on your wish list...?
 
Mine is now disconnected and got my free parts. Now I just have more of an eye looking where I park so its not an issue.

Only downside is I can't rub it in that I can reverse to my buddy on his Challenger anymore.....
 
I took my R18 B to the dealer in Modesto, California for the first 600 mile service and they let me decline disabling the reverse module. I told them I'll wait until I get the official notice in the mail and decide then if I want the reverse module disabled. They were cool with that.
 
After reading all these inputs regarding the reverse re-call i am now having thoughts of just leave it be (as it is working perfectly ) there does not seem to be a definitive solution at present from BMW , will the reverse be repaired in the future ? what if any is the outcome if you do get moisture in the reverse module ? the second hand value, s of the bike is terrible now , if we lose the reverse option it will plummet even more , still at a loss what to do .

I am oft bewildered by the preoccupation many have with the "used" value of the bike. It perplexes me why some people make the purchase decision while burdening themselves with thoughts of resale value. I bought my bike to ride, not to sell. Resale values are affected by a plethora of reasons not least being the general state of the economy. Here down under during covid the used value of motor vehicles was higher than the original sale price. Why? Because you couldn't get a new vehicle without a wait of up to 18 months. Now the reverse is true. The same with bikes. They depreciate rapidly, level out, then appreciate slowly over time. Motorcycles are an investment - an investment in your time and enjoyment. Ride the dream, dream the ride, make your life a ride.

Nice way to put it.... I brought mine to ride, never once thought to sell even with the recalls. For my enjoyment, maybe 10 years from now I will think about resell.... But for now it is my pleasure to ride,
 
My Model B is absolutely my last bike, so selling it never entered my mind..

I did say the same thing back in 2008, with a GS Adventure (Or at least that is what I told my wife..); and that was 96,000+ miles ago, before selling it towards the purchase of the R18 B First Edition..
 
Got my official letter.
The amount of the compensation isn't explicit...
They say the repair is done at no cost :giggle:
The recall number is : 000611900. Do they have one for worldwide or country/country ?

Je suis souvent déconcerté par la préoccupation de beaucoup pour la valeur « d’occasion » de la moto. Je ne comprends pas pourquoi certaines personnes prennent la décision d’achat en se souciant de la valeur de revente. J’ai acheté ma moto pour rouler, pas pour la vendre. Les valeurs de revente sont affectées par une multitude de raisons, notamment l’état général de l’économie. Ici, pendant la pandémie, la valeur d’occasion des véhicules automobiles était supérieure au prix de vente initial. Pourquoi ? Parce qu’on ne pouvait pas obtenir un nouveau véhicule sans attendre jusqu’à 18 mois. Aujourd’hui, c’est l’inverse. C’est la même chose avec les motos. Elles se déprécient rapidement, se stabilisent, puis s’apprécient lentement au fil du temps. Les motos sont un investissement – un investissement dans votre temps et votre plaisir. Conduisez le rêve, rêvez la balade, faites de votre vie une balade.
Tout à fait OK avec toi , c'est un investissement pour son plaisir, si il fallait acheter que ce qui se revend très bien....ou est le plaisir.
 
Just received my reverse recall this week, but no mention of any compensation. Mentioned on this forum, some folks says their are offered a $1000 credit and others 4 or 5% of what they paid for the bike. Is this compensation up to each individual dealer and something you have to negotiate, or does BMW only offer it if to you if you ask?
