R18 Classic 2023 and Vulcan S 2020
Just got news from the dealer I was about to plunk a deposit on the Classic I was looking at --paniced when I saw it delisted on the web site.

He said R18's with Revrse have a recall now.

This is the first I'm seeing of anything in the US around a reverse recall. The BMW recall site only shows the active recall for the headlight on my B (impacts the TC also). Maybe something coming down the line, but nothing officially put up through BMW that I can find.

and for what it's worth, the dealer I got my B from currently lists 2 more Bs with reverse. Wonder if they're just slow to take action on the site?

Id be inclined to wonder if my dealer was tryn to pull something fishy on the deal... but for the fact they pulled all the other R18s off the website.

However -- plugging in other R18's on the official BMW motorcycle recall search found here: https://nhtsa.bmwgroup.com/safetyrecall/pages/motorradRecallSearch.xhtml --nothing comes up. and when I call BMW recall hotline I'm told I need the actual VIN of the bike in question.. which of course bc the bike is off the site I can't provide now.

Per this site, there was a reverse recall in China at some point.

Thread 'Reverse gear recall problem'

There is definitely a recall in place for the R18s with reverse. There is also a do not sell order from BMW for any in-stock bikes of this type. I'm currently shopping for a Transcontinental, and two different dealers told me they could not sell me the bikes they have in stock until the recall items are corrected. I was told the notification to the dealers happened Tuesday morning.

Well as of today 25/9/2024 here in the UK i have never heard of a recall for this , if it is genuine what is it for ? and what is the problem ? anyone in UK been contacted by BMW ? i,ll be in touch if i get any updates.

So, I noted a couple of things regarding this topic:

1. I ran my VIN through the National Safety Board and it only shows a single recall outstanding, which is the infamous Headlight issue (see the below image).

2. The BMW Motorrad site let me configure or build a Model B, which includes the Reverse option as standard.

3. The two forum members that have introduced this issue and or are providing supporting dialogue (nothing concrete though) are fairly "new members", meaning they joined the forum within the past week. I recently received a PM from another "new member" who stated their Uncle has a R18 with the gear shifters that I desire, but I need to PM him at some obscure Gmail address...

Food for thought, none of this is adding up in my book; despite, I use my Reverse Gear after each ride and find it extremely helpful for my parking situation... Could be R18 hate noise, could be a legit thing...

LOL... Sheesh. Yeah, Im 'that' new member and I just come on forums to shyt post and cause choas.

If you look at the very title of this thread you see Im asking a question as denoted by that thing called a question mark. (?) I related my experience and I never stated that there was an actual recall, rather what I was told. If you read my post(s) you'd see its written in a manner where Im trying find out the truth of it, as further denoted by my attempts and even phone call to BMW corporate. Even the other new member @MN246 you're throwing shade on was just, for the most part, relaying his experience albeit a little more conclusively.

I have zero intent or wish to sew mayhem and conspiracy on forums. 👍Cya

Secondly - I related my experience and I never stated that there was an actual recall, rather what I was told. 3rd, if you actually read my post(s) you'd see its written in a manner where Im trying find out the truth of it, as further denoted by my attempts and even phone call to BMW corporate. Oh but wait I lie about that too. 🤣 Even the other new member @MN246 you're throwing shade on was just, for the most part, relaying his experience albeit a little more conclusively.

Thanks for sewing suspicion on new members but -- for the record I have zero intent or wish to sew mayhem and conspiracy on forums. 👍Cya

Don't take it personally... We've seen weirder post on this forum... You seem legit.. and I apologize..

Good luck on your.search and hopefully your next purchase; I love my Model B and use the Reverse drive very often without any issues. If you are considering a Model B, and the dealership is holding you back - me personally, given hindsight is 20/20; I would find a used First Edition Model B in the $12K-$15K price range. I recently purchased a used First Edition R18, that I'm planning on customizing... My point is, I would buy a used R18 platform across the brand, they're extremely easy to work on and maintain up to now in my experience..

Don't take my word for it, give them a call. Engle is a long standing BMW dealer in Kansas City. I was there in person yesterday and they told me they couldn't sell me the brand new Transcontinental that is sitting on the floor. Nor could they sell me any other R18 with reverse. I also spoke with Gateway BMW in St. Louis. They told me they could possibly sell me a bike, but would not be able to deliver the bike until the recall situation is sorted.

I didn't join the group to start trouble or create controversy. Maybe before floating the idea that new members are ill intentioned, pick up the phone and call a dealer. I would bet they were all notified at the same time.

I was told the recall concerned the seal on the reverse selection lever. Supposedly the concern is that it will begin leaking. I don't know for sure that is accurate, but it is what I was told my one of the dealers.

Leaking? I guess I didn’t even imagine there’s any kind of liquid in there.

Bahhhhh! I’m curious when BMW will confirm with owners and what the actual problem with the reverse is. I guess it won’t render the bike a safety hazard if it fails, ala the headlight, but still frustrating to have something else to take the bike in for at some point down the line.
Hopefully it's not the same issue that AUDI had...
