Recall? On all models with Reverse

I'd suggest a custom made, waist high, dual marble Roman columns, supporting an elongated crown molded rectangular platform --gives it the elevated status it deserves and being more eye level, makes it easier adore the artful engineering.

I'm in SoCal too and by your comment I'd think this issue only surfaces if water/moisture gets IN the reverse assist? In other words it's not something strictly internal like leaking engine fluids?

AI doesn't quite get it --but close. haha

I think your on to something here, great idea ;)

I took the First Edition in yesterday to have the Reverse recall applied; the dealership is going to circle back with me on Tuesday, on the process of applying the $1,000 towards a new 719 seat for my Model B.

I have an appointment next Saturday to have the recall applied to the Model B; however, I'm probably going to cancel as I also use the Reverse functionality after each ride.

I took a closer look at what the dealership did to disable the Reverse function; it looks like, they removed the power cables from connection 2 & 3 ( I didn't see connection 5 either, but might have missed it due to the tight space..) and actually took or physically removed the cabling... Below is a comparison of the Maintenance diagram and an actual picture of my 2021 FE (sorry - poor lighting & a tight space). I might open up the Model B and take some pictures of what an "Enabled Reverse" wiring group looks like for comparison (weather pending ride-wise today...)

Interesting that they’d take the wiring!

Do you know if there’s an ECU update along with this? Or just a physical modification?

It's just the removal of the heavy gauge wiring from lug No. 2, which is connected to the 12 V connector terminal on the Reverser motor.

Replacing the DC cable between the Reverse module and the Reverse motor will restore the functionality.

I took a closer look at the Reverse control module, which is reporting water ingress which is the root cause of corrosion of the electrical terminals; Ohm's law says, higher-resistance = higher voltage drop & lower voltage = higher current (amperage). The corrosion will cause poor conductivity, resulting in higher resistance, which has a cascading affect which results in higher amperage, and most likely electrical overstress or high heat.

The below image shows what could possibly be the water ingress point, located at the upper No. 2 terminal.

So they’ll disable the module and provide $1000 credit, but I wonder if they’re doing anything to address the failure and to remedy it. If you disable it and get a credit now, can you go back and have it reactivated when they figure out the issue? Or is this their figuring out of the issue?

Removing the option and giving me $1000 BMW Bucks isn’t acceptable, even if I rarely use the feature. There’s nothing I’d even use it on!

You’d think that, if anywhere, we’d have heard about some of the more severe reverse failings on this forum. I can remember a couple instances of issues, but nothing that seemed dangerous.

Keep hearing of $1000+ in accessories being given for the issue. Interested to see what they offer in Canada. Took bike in today.
Please advise, I’m on the east coast. Let me know what they offered.

Had my classic in the dealership today. They unhooked the reverse as there is a danger of "smoldering". They don't have a fix as of yet.

And the disturbing news here is they will send out the official letter on November 18. Delaying tactics! Can we just all file a lemon case here?

Seriously, reason I bought the R18 is because of the reverse feature 🤣

There are certain parameters to be eligible under lemon laws and they vary by state. There are usually conditions around number of repair attempts and/or time out of service within a certain period after purchase that must be met to qualify. Further, some states (like Michigan, for instance) don’t count motorcycles under the law.

So, while it’s frustrating to have back to back recalls on the bike, it’s something we either live with or something that pushes us to sell the bike. I’ll live with it because A) I won’t get jack on a trade and maybe close to jack for a private sale if I find the right person after however long that’d take and B) a comparable bike from HD is thousands more. And until I’m ready for Goldwing life, the R18 is the jam.

For comparison’s sake, I bought a 2023 Ford Maverick that had probably 3 or 4 recalls issued in the span of a year. It happens. It sucks. But it gets fixed at some point. Hopefully.

Well said.

Well the full story i was told by my local service dept is ,the unit will be disabled as the engineering dept have not yet produced the remedy to the problem , when this is announced the unit will be repaired even if you go out of warranty , there was no mention whatsoever about compensation , so i will broach that when i take my bike in . Could be of course that the staff have been told not too mention compensation unless it is broached by the customer .

Just dropped my Transcontinental in for its 10K service. Advised that the BMW rep in Australia was informed by BMW Germany that a remedy is likely by the end of this year (early next at the latest). So it seems🤞 that we may only be without the reverser for a short time. Credos to BMW for the compensation package for what may only be a short inconvenience.

The cold is settling in here in the mid-west USA, so I won’t rush into a shop anytime soon. Hopefully there’s something permanent by the time the weather starts to break in spring.

I live in South Eastern USA, I've contacted my local dealer and BMW Motorrad USA and neither of them have heard of any type of incentive being offered due to the recall.
