Finally found the culprit!
I haven’t posted in a while despite quite a bit happening, so here’s the latest.
As mentioned before, I’ve been using the iCarsoft MT V6 to monitor
Component Group 1 voltage in real time (
@Star-Lord it was something like ECU → Live Data → Component Group 1 →
Wave was like a separate function which displayed that real time voltage graph).
I took off the rectifier cover underneath, removed all the zip ties and started gently moving the wiring around. It didn’t take long to notice something odd: it looked like the previous owner, when removing the exhaust servo, had pulled the harness and zip‑tied it under tension. I never spotted it because it was tucked behind the rectifier (while I was busy with the connectors side of things..)
Once I unwrapped the loom, it became obvious the tape had holes, and one of the wires going to the exhaust servo had
damaged insulation and was shorting to the frame.
As soon as I touched that wire to the frame, the ECU instantly shut down Component Group 1. That’s exactly what had been happening continuously, which explains why the O2 sensors were being taken out and the engine felt rough.
Repaired the wire, wrapped everything properly…
short gone, error gone.
Battery + ECU reset adventure
During all this I also realised the battery wasn’t in great shape (also hinted by
@Ulrich and
@PHIPHIGOY ), so I ordered a
Noco NLP30 and swapped out the OEM one saving about 7 kg!
Feeling more confident with the iCarsoft diag, I decided to reset the ECU parameters so it could recalibrate everything after all the disassembly. Bad idea. The reset worked, but the tool failed to initiate the
Throttle twistgrip learning, which left the throttle values
negative at rest and triggered a new error..
Didn’t want to waste time, so I ordered the
UniCarScan UCSI‑2100 OBD and paid for the MotoScan app license. OBD arrived the next day, and within two minutes I had the throttle min/max values relearned and
all errors cleared.
Since then: I’ve done around 300–400 miles, riding pretty much every day. Bike rides great.
And the timing… unreal
With SBF going into administration, I genuinely feel like I dodged a bullet.. The bike was scheduled for collection last Friday. On Thursday, when they called, I told them (lied?) I wasn’t around and we’d need to reschedule. because I wanted to do a final round of troubleshooting with the iCarsoft tool.
The very day it was supposed to be collected, they announced they were going bust
So imagine this: I finally track down the issue, fix the wiring, the bike is finally working - and the dealer who was meant to “repair” it goes into administration. Mad
