R18 Louvered Performance Plates

If I don't get controll of my thoughts, I can see myself looking at the two top panels whilst thinking about what metal in them can go..... like maybe lengthen the slots behind the side pates, cut some away at the top.....

The simplest would be enlarging the top opening. Now thát would imo need a mesh to discourage rodents to overwinter up there. For the rest it would not do much harm to do away with the filter entirely unless you plan do cross the Sahara or go do rally raids. Normal road use sees not much dirt collected in the filter. It would only test marginally more Si in the oil or more cil. wear under above mentioned circumstances or at véry high mileage.
Insects and critters like that would be simply chewed up, passed through and burned off.
But then there is no worse fear than the fear for fear itself 🫣 🤫

-I would donate to another run with three large fans blowing 30 mph to better simulate reality. At a minimum a strong household fan located right in front of the case. Maybe he did this idk.
I recall he said he was going to have a large fan blowing at the front of the bike when on the dyno.

That would be a great idea. It would take a lot of air from in front of the bike tho. For reference, it takes a conscious effort to stand in front of all 30mph wind.

Hi guys. Yes we did have three fans blowing on the bike during the dyno test. I'll include some images so you can see. We estimate the airspeed to be around 45 to 50 mph to simulate the bike moving down the road. I've also included some images of the 3D printed prototypes we experimented with.

For a better understanding; the rolling road dynometers are accelerometers.
As such their results are to all extends and purposes the same as in/on vehicle apps.

haha. Ok. You have fans that produce winds equal to a tropical storm. That’s impressive!!! 😂 Can’t wait for the video of the guy strapped to the bike.

Again like an accelerometer app.
It is completely useless to compare results from different dynos or apps.
Their value lies in before/after results. Again forget kW, Nm and just look at the delta in %.

Ah and for comparative temp reading I use a simple IR one.

And I have observed it several times before; we are só blessed with the wideband O2 sensors.
MAF, temp, wideband... by jove; so much easier than RAD tables, weather station, plug readings. That díd serve to gain fundamental understanding though.

The dyno is a tool. When used correctly, it can be very helpful. We used this session to see if there are any gains to be had. That's all. No tuning, just testing and measuring the results. And the before and after results were good. I wish the tuner from BT Tuning had the ability to data log the dyno runs. It would have been nice to see the widebands 02 sensors auto adjusting the increased cooler airflow and other data.
 
I got to thinking about this and why would BMW put an opening under those plates on each side? If the purpose is just to show an "1800 cc" plaque on both sides a simple 2 bolt holes per side would suffice to attach the plates.

But, no, they actually left holes there for the aftermarket (or any tinkerer with the means) to take advantage of. Good on you BMW!

When you remove the plates, it gives you access to the 2 bolts that secure the upper engine cases to the engine block on each side. So I believe this was the intended design. I'm just taking advantage of the addition benefits of the openings.

Reminds me of the day I asked my dad what those tall poles were by the airport. He said to hold up the red lights. I asked him what the lights were for and he said so planes didn’t hit the poles.
