Morning all,I post this really for the benefit or perhaps interest of any overseas forum members because I expect most Brits are already aware of the City of Chester and its Roman legacy in particular. When we were kids my parents used to take us there for short holidays and lots of visits because we had elderly relations that lived all around that area of Cheshire (the County). Sadly they are now all deceased and obviously we’ve all grown up, moved away and now have our own busy lives, so we no longer have a reason to visit there really, which is a shame, it’s quite a way from where we now live.
Anyhow. My sister & I arranged to meet up in Chester with mum & dad (now in their 80’s) and sort of take a walk down memory lane, so I’ve been there for a couple of days this week. It was lovely and I thought it was worth telling people about it incase you were thinking of visiting the UK, or England in particular.
I suppose you can Google it all yourself to read up and there’s no point copying & pasting too much here BUT Chester remains a Roman walled City with artifacts and ruins everywhere. There’s literally a big wall you can walk on and complete a whole circuit of the Roman city (as it was 2000 years ago), it has fabulous and unmolested old timber buildings between 400 & 500 years old everywhere and a number are actually authentic old pubs. It’s not fake. We had lunch in a pub called the Victoria that opened in 1269! Yes it’s 756 years old. There’s a Cathedral, lots of shops, places to eat, even river boat rides on the River Dee that runs through Chester. It’s a little gem tbh and maybe off the normal tourist radar for visitors. There’s a lot more to England than just London!
Just to be clear these photos have been lifted from the internet because it never even crossed my mind to take any photos while I was there, I’ve seen them for real many times! That’s me, mum, dad and sister (asked a passer by to take the photo of us on the wall). Best wishes all
