R18 Anniversary Edition
Apparently when buying a BMW motorcycle, the check engine light will automatically come on after 12 months. Since I don't have a $499 BMW r11 tool, I took it to the dealer to have it reset. A fierce winter with heavy snowfall meant parking the bike for nearly 80 days. Thus only 3,500 miles after 12 months.
Funny, I had the dealer service department do the 1st oil change at about 500 miles.

My service shop manager called me out for the re-installed DC cables to restore the Reverse functionality on my FE Bobber Project bike this weekend; he claimed the DC cables were super hot and it could have caused a fire 🔥, I pushed back and explained that "that's not how that circuit works...", he jumped to another customer before I could explain Ohm's Law to him and his fear mongering...

He also mentioned that I'm basically unethical for posting any of the service techniques on the forum; I'm guessing, he or his staff participate within the forums from time-to-time...

I'll have to consider making better choices going forward, especially in regards to having my bike serviced... The comments probably wouldn't have bothered me, if they were remotely accurate vs a "know it all" making baseless statements.

For someone without a full blown service shop book, and proprietary BMW tools, specifically designed for the R18 platform - I feel like I'm doing OK, and definitely think I have the skill set to tackle 90% of the annual Maintenance required to see 100k miles on this bike..

In short, yesterday's comments were pretty disappointing and are a good measuring stick for those on the fence to invest in a GS-911 HEX tool and a Fluke Volt - Ohm meter...

Your service shop manager didn’t know he was talking to someone who knew more than he did !

'unethical' ... LOL that is rich coming from a shop manager that charges upwards of $150/hour and pays their mechanics $25 (I am guessing here) ...

If that guy thinks it's unethical, he hasn't been around motorcycles or forums very much, or even ANY group of motorheads.
Your story makes me even more appreciative with the service manager at my dealership: pretty much tells it like it is and let's me, the customer, make the choice. Doesn't try to bamboozle me, and also tells me that some choices I make MAY not work out in my favor. I appreciate honesty.
