Preventative device. So you don’t get caught up in shaft ( drive ). Take it off.

I thought it was there if flairs ever come back into fashion on long pants, or maybe for people with hairy ankles (and live in a warm climate).

Take it off, and every time you have a passenger, ask them:

When I removed the pillion seat I also removed the passenger foot pegs and blanked off the holes. This little "guard" was removed too. It kind of opens up the view on the driveshaft which I like.
