Morning all. My new R18 (that I’m going to nickname Big Girl) arrived late yesterday, pic below. Going to be a great day! My usual Optimate trickle charge won’t seem to work on it though. I tried the ‘electronic handshake’ thing too but after about a minute it turns off the circuit. I had a BMW RnineT Racer back in 2017 and that worked fine so I presume things have changed since then. It’s there in the picture but actually switched off. So I’m not sure whether to fork out for one of these genuine BMW chargers like the OP or try to get at the battery to put on a direct charging lead (to my Optimate)? Having looked online this morning Optimate do a BMW can bus version 4 that looks like good value at about £75. Any UK owners got one? Bike looks awesome though and my wife thinks it does too 😁.

I'm using an Optimate 4 Can-bus Edition charger and its works fine through the side charge / electrical post (the din plug type outlet near the left hand sidecover) on my 22 R18B if that helps

Yes great thank you. I will have a serious look later on today, compare prices and see if I can get one ordered.
 
The genuince BMW charger is available for much the same money - if not cheaper than the optimate v4.

I got mine brand new from a BMW dealer via ebay for something like £60.
 
Thank you. I have emailed the BMW dealer I bought mine from to ask about the charger and cost. Looks like I should be able to get either one for about that money which would be good.

Ok…. Not sure how you feel that is significant unless you didn’t read your manual. Pretty much every BMW made since 2010 has their powerlet ports controlled by the CANBus. Normal chargers won’t work on them.
