Removing the fuel tank from the TC

2021 R18 Classic First Edition
Hey, this november I'm going to have my fuel tank custom painted by a talented airbrush artist. I'd like to remove the tank myself and take it to him. Can someone walk me through how difficult it would be to do that, and what the steps are? Thanks!!

Good question. When you get the answer can you put it in the DIY link below? I expect it to be similar across the range of bikes.

I can’t help you except I know you have to go in from the side (remove side plate(s) ala air filter replacement), to disconnect the fuel fitting on the pure r18. After that it should be nuts and bolts holding the tank on with a couple vent lines. Likely straight fwd to find for someone of your talents.

Wow, for a second there I thought you were painting a galaxy colored tank. Certain it will look nice when done. Are you doing it with a flat paint finish like the rest of the gray/green colored bike?

I'm going to have the R18 classic pinstriping added to the tank, but not white. Probably a hand-turned gold or copper leaf. Then inside the pinstriping, I want to put a dragonscale pattern in greens, golds, coppers and perhaps tinges of red. Here's an image that has a dragon scale pattern I like. The colors would just have to be altered to what I mentioned.

Thanks! I struggled for ideas for awhile. I'm a huge fan of the movie 300, so I was going to put Spartan warriors on the tank, but figured that would greatly hurt future resale value. Dragonscale is probably a bit less off-putting as far as a custom paint job goes. I'm having it done in November, and it's going to cost $1000

When I bought my bike, they had a galaxy one too. I was ALL about it, then the wife said "It looks girly, don't buy that color." :ROFLMAO::rolleyes:
 
Smart man, happy wife happy life. I can get that thought a bit as well. Though in my case, I like the galaxy on bagger and tc but not on the lower trim R18 model(s). Don't recall if it was offered on the Classic or just base R18 only as other bikes bmw put that color on.

For some reason, maybe the bags and fairing, it seemed ok to me on the higher trim models. Your color is a good one so win win in the house hold.

I liked the galaxy a lot. The color I ended up with was my third favorite. Went into the dealership because on their website, they said they had a black one in stock. When I got there, the salesman said "Oh, that was a mistake, we didn't get the black one in." After I drove 3.5 hours to get there... :mad:

My wife said the same thing... The FE edition B model was her favorite, which is now my favorite....

did you ever get the tank off I'm trying to take mine off now I've taken the front and rear mounting bolts out and its loos just not too sure about the wires and fuel lines underneath
