It made no sense sell the hide before the bear was killed:
My son will be very happy to print some more.
He will do them in his own time though as he does need to pass exams.

Do you lot think 20€ ex. shipping ok for the first sets?
They are a straight fit.
The development and test prints were/are on me as Í wanted them for myself.
Any gains are for him.

Shipping will be cheap as they fit in envelop and are lightweight.
As I am not a business will ship as ´free sample 3D print motorcycle part´.

Please do note that the intake rubber nééd be deleted for it to be effective.
Next better is delete the lid.
Final is fit a sports filter. I found a frame to keep the filter in place superfluous. Just add a bit of glue/silicon for extra measure. Remember it is sucked ín so inclined to stay put.
Without the rubber and the lid but stock filter it will still be effective.

I believe this is quite acceptable, thank you.
I understand the other flow restrictions you are addressing. I will still need to acquire an aftermarket 'sports filter' and will look in to the Sprint.

asked for a pro-forma bill for a Velorex 562 and extended 5 point fitting kit.

The extra weight adds up to less than the TransContinental weighs and the extra oompf should make it about on par with the original base model. Should be fun.

All that power will however be quite a load on the sidecar mountings. Hence I have decided to go for a five point design: A second extra rigid mount for low rear. Use the stock low rear for the extra mid mount triangulating the other four making the whole >twice as rigid.
Will do the fitting myself.

The geometry settings are quite a challenge. Will explain if there is an interest otherwise it is too boring technical ;)

Wow, that was a positive surprise for a change. New (old stock) sidecar, mounting kit, extra mountings, accessories (like deluxe luggage rack, tonneau etc.) and various fasteners, including shipping!!! under 3.5k€ (y)

The totally over the top paperwork, homologation et al will be near 2k. The red tape costing more than half the price of the hardware.

Connect the sidecar lights the CANbus will a bit of a pita but as was helpfully shared on this forum the HEX Ezcan is the solution. Same for all other electrical accessories. Here a link to the guide on this forum. Especially helpful as it is the only source (that I found) for dummies (meaning me) of info about where to find to plug it into the R18 CANbus:


A bit of anecdotal; although I live in the urbanised part of the mountain village, the directions are a bit problematic for non locals meaning the messengers delivering packages. As such I use three different delivery addresses withing urb.limits but LARGE deliveries need a larger delivery address. Now THAT becomes funny because most garages/work shops are outside of the village. This mean camino as in no tarmac, no street name thus no number. Several shipping companies do not deliver at an ' incomplete' address.

Here is the 5 point I am planning to fit: The mountings 1 to 4 are 'standard' best practice. 5 is the triangulation of them. It is like a cross brace within a square frame.

So looking forward to fitting the Velorex to the R18.
It will be my 5th combination but very little like the others.
Both weight and power are literally and figuratively pushing the limits.
An anachronistic, asymetric two track vehicle is incredibly engaging fun. Now add a supersport power/weight ratio ;)

Almost 40 years ago I had an outfit coupled to a Kawasaki Z1300. ^ cylinder water cooldown shaft drive beast!
Still remember my first ride after fitting it.
Lets just say the I don't know who was more surprised the car coming the other way as I dashed across the road into the ditch or my brother sitting in the rig giving me instructions!

Had some exciting times learning to ride with the throttle and brakes for steering!

Obviously being in Australia the rig was on the other side. Hand full of front brake to go right and down a gear and a handful of throttle to head left!

Passenger in the rig and getting chased by one up sports bikes through the twisties between the Sunshine Coast ant toowoomba!

What a blast

Well you must have had a steep learning curve! The concept of a sidecar was born in the 1800s for a wicker chair to a bicycle.
The same asymetric no-design bolting a chair to a Z1300... beejeezus that is bordering suicidal 😅 or murderous from the passenger pov 😇

That Z1300 had a glorious engine already stretching the reasonable of handling as a solo bike. I can totally imagine the experiences; the fun and near disasters.
You NO DOUBT get completely the involving nature of sidecar riding. There is nothing like it.

I had my learning period with an MZ TS250 with Superelastik chair. A brilliantly simple yet practical and reliable lightweight combination and meant as such by design. Basically the inverse of your Z1300 combi 😉

The idea is that the R18 will be sort of suitable because it is more a gentle giant than a brute power house.
The low centre of gravity should make centrifugal toppling forces a bit less tricky and the heavy weight bias should make it less subject to the push/pull of the third wheel.

p.s. going out for a specialty beer. My mind is getting numbed by measuring, pondering over, remeasuring, repondering, repeat sidecar mountings...:rolleyes:

Just bear with me: torque = force x lever length.
Yet in guides covering sidecar geometry/set up this does not feature anywhere.
It is crucial though. Take the track. The wider the track, the longer the lever, meaning that the same forces have a equivalently greater effect. More push/pull, more stress on the mountings, more effect of toe in, etc.
See why I ponder on the logic of seldomly in accordance guides? I let the Jawa, MZ and IMZ/URAL specs weigh heavy as those are factory spec. for hundreds of thousands of combinations.
I will be going for as narrow a track as the cylinder head to body clearance allows. Right, that is one down :ROFLMAO:

Even more interesting it was the last of the carburetor models. And I did a custom exhaust with custom air filter, basically removed the plastic box and made a mesh screen and used it to hold scrubbing pads in place, then custom tune with rejetted carbs. Couldn’t buy new jets so custom made my own using originals and drilling them out on a small jewelers lathe. And adjusted the seat height on the jets.

As you say was handful without the rig.

One year I did a lap of the closed Bathurst track with the sidecar. Now that was interesting!!

The company that did my custom exhaust freaked out when I bought the bike back and complained they were scraping when cornering. They needed to tuck them up higher! Not long after I added the outfit.
 
@Noelpolar that snorkel looks übercool and matches the exhaust tips but will without any doubt upset the airflow sensor with out of bounds readings.

@Red64 exhilerating indeed!!

Meanwhile drawing up the plan. May likely need a different, special, mounting for the high front where the frame parts are bolted together. Ideally a clamp going around both.

Also as the BMW system does not lend itself for an easy coupling of a sidecar disc, I may still fit the brake plate and a separate pedal or lever for independent application. Dunno. Would benefit rh turns big time.
 
Sidecar thread or not?
On the one hand it is because of the sidecar but on the other it is on the R18 so.... best here.
Since the passenger will be in the chair and also the max. loads are not too generous, will delete the pillion cushion. Would like to fit a small luggage rack instead.
Options are Wünderlich, China, BMW-Europe.
The latter has the imo best looks and is just above mid price point.

Has anyone tried reaching out to the owner of the bike, in order to get the details about the side mounted air intakes on the 1800 engine cases??

I think he is located in Australia..?

I haven't (bikesales is the motorbike sales site in aussie.... and fwiw.... real aussie say motorbike not motorcycle.... haha).
 
Slight change of work order; all ready to put back but still need to buy the spray paint :oops:
Time for a cup of coffee and thán go out for that.

As expected one of the bronze inserts unscrewed. Serious PITA that. Put some glue on and screwed it back.
The Sprint fliter has a more generous rubber surround and I have decided that I will not bugger the lid; do without. Was not going to refite the intake harmonicas anyway. Added a droplet of glue in the corners and it will stay put.
