R18 TC
I was just curious how many R18 riders have had knee replacements and are still able to ride comfortably.

Sadly, my left knee is degrading and I can only stand short jaunts on my TC now. The R18 requires a more severe knee bend than some bikes. What was initially a little awkward has now become excruciating when shifting.

I was hoping a knee replacement could fix this, but if not, I have to look at selling the bike.

The TC is about as heavy a bike you can get so you are up against it a bit really with a bad knee, especially the left as that does most work riding and uprighting the bike off the stand. Just wondered if you’ve ever tried the Honda DCT system? I had a DTC Crosstourer about 5 years ago and it was really good, the very latest versions are even better so if it’s a case of keeping you on two wheels then try one out. They have a few models now with that system. You adjust to it really quickly, it’s literally effortless, I suppose the killer question for me would be, would I have another DCT? Yes I would.

Thanks for the feedback. I did consider a DCT, but here in the States we only have the Gold Wing and the Rebel 1100 in a DCT. I get your point about the weight of the bike, so it really only leaves the Rebel. It might be something I get forced into. I hope not.

My pre-replacement knee is oddly damaged. It is pain free when walking or weight bearing (like when uprighting the bike) but is very painful when bent enough to put on the floorboard. I think a bike with forward controls might be less painful, but I'm back to selling the R18 and getting something else.

It’s about quality of life! Find the best orthopedic surgeon and have it done! Very painful difficult rehabilitation but it’s worth it better than crying about osteoarthritis! 8 months out of surgery and I’m ready to ride! All hail to titium knee replacement! I feel like a BMW

Ahh, yes I see, here in the Uk we have quite a choice of DCT Hondas, I assumed wrongly you’d be the same. That’s a shame but you can’t be in pain on it, for one thing it will be very distracting and that’s not good on a bike, we need to be focussed. I hope you find a solution that works whatever that turns out to be 👍

I was talking to my HD riding friend and he said HD is going to start selling the HD branded prosthetics at the dealer. He said they're calling them "jiffy stands"

Thanks! The NT1100 looks exactly like something I would be interested in.
I’ve sat on one in the showroom, felt like it would be very comfortable, very roomy. Felt very much like the ST1100 Pan European I’ve had in the past, real mile muncher. Sadly chain drive nowadays but other than that I liked it.

I’ve had my left knee replaced. I can ride my FE which has normal foot pegs with no issues at all. I was recently leant a Roctane whilst my GSA was having some work done and I hated it. It had foot boards and a hell and toe shifter. I couldn’t get along with it at all, to the point that it was becoming painful. 🤷🏼‍♂️

No knee replacement but both hips and one shoulder. Both knees were scaped a long time ago before they decided against that procedure. I found a bicycle with geriatric assistance an awesome knee therapy.
I have bought the R18 because it will in a none too distant future make the ideal mankyman´s sidecar rig.
There are sveral tankshift solutions btw. including the clutch action. Roll off the gas and operate the lever, presto.
