Is that space normal?

2021 BMW R18 FE
Sorry for the bad picture, but that is a gap where the forks attract to the steerer. It’s the same on both sides but why would there be a spare there??

It is to allow the forks to be clamped correctly. If no gap the forks may not be held at the correct pressure. Have a look at the handlebar clamps it is the same on those with a gap at the rear only.

There are many example of clamping mechanisms on the bike.
-How your brake / clutch master cylinders clamps on to the handle bar.
-How at forks bottoms clamps on to the wheel axles.

100% need a torque wrench if you are doing any kind of maintenance on a motorcycle.
 
💯 on using a torque wrench

I downloaded many if not all of the installation documentation for the various accessories for my Model B; the documentation is very detailed, which includes torque specifications and tightening pattern steps.
