Hello from Nebraska

2022 R18 Transcontinental
I am new to the site and have just recently purchased a R18 Transcontinental and have enjoyed it so far except I have had problems with the cruise control, took it to the dealer and supposed to have fixed the problem but on the way home it did the same thing as before, talked to dealer and they seem to be having same problem on other bikes. Shows distance control failure and so disabled cruise control, my dealer is looking into a permanent fix but so far unable to come up with a solution. Is anyone else having this issue?
 
Welcome aboard...!!! It sounds like you are having issues with the adaptive cruise control system..?

I hardly use the ACC system; however, I've tried it on a few occasions in order to get a feel for it. I have found where I've received an error message or warning once; I was able to clear the condition by cleaning what looked like dead insect carcacusses from the face of the RADAR array located above the headlight - maybe take look at your bike and see if it is dirty.. (it's a Black colored square)
 
Yes I did that but didn't make a difference. Dealer recalibrated it yesterday and they seem to think it is something with the radar getting knocked out of alinement
 
The service shop should probably go ahead and replace the RADAR array module; the Transceiver and Antenna is packaged as a single unit... meaning, there isn't for example a possible bad piece of wave guide or coaxial cable to go bad or come loose..
 
Were you anywhere near Chadron? lol The first time my ACC went out with the distance warning I was riding toward Chadron from Crawford. There were a lot of bugs that day so I figured that could be a factor. It fixed itself a couple days later. I mentioned it to Sturgis BMW and they recalibrated it and it worked fine afterwords riding around SD and WY. I did a loop down to Nebraska through Alliance and was heading into Chadron from the north and it just went out again. I switched off ACC and used regular cruise. The next day ACC was working fine.

I found it very odd that the only two times I had the ACC fail was within 5 miles of Chadron.

Yes as a matter of fact I was south of Chadron about 20 miles when it went off the first time, took bike back to Sturgis, they recalibrated it and worked fine until I got just past the golf course south of Chadron then out again. Strange!!!
I just can’t seem to get mine to turn back on, something I’m not doing right?

I’d try turning ACC off in settings, use standard cruise on a ride, then turning ACC back on. Mines been working fine since the last time it went out and came back. I’m leaving on a road trip to Missouri tomorrow so I’ll find out just how well it will work. It’s a very nice feature but as long as I at least have regular cruise I’m fine.
 
The ACC seems to be an issue with some TC, my dealer is looking into it more, I really like it when it works but if I have to get along with regular cruise for awhile that's okay too. Better than not having cruise at all.

Another thing I noticed is the fuel mileage is very good on this bike compared to my last bike, went from 35 mpg on a good day to 45 mpg riding straight into a head wind, I got 55+ mpg with no wind or maybe a slight tail wind.

I use my ACC on Alcina all the time with no issues. Aside from the fact it can't detect motorcycles in front of me (too narrow for the radar to pick up), it makes highway rides far more enjoyable.

It sounds like you might have a defective unit. Be sure to stay on it with your dealer so it can get replaced during your warranty period.

I would agree that BMW has a corner on pleasant ride and terrific mechanics. My R18 has the easiest pull clutch and the transmission goes into gear with only a “click” sound. No thud as if I just sheared a pin.
 
Yes the transmission shifts a lot smoother than my last bike, sometimes can’t tell if it even shifted

I am pretty new to this kind of stuff, just thought I would check out what other people thought of the new BMW Transcontinental and if they were having issues like I am, nothing to serious just bugs that need to be worked out, so far I really like my bike and look forward to many happy miles.
