To my fellow R18 owners & forum members:
May I introduce,
I am scheduled to pick up my nearly-new 2022 R18 B behemoth bike from the Motorcycles of Charlotte BMW dealership tomorrow (Tuesday, October 22nd, 2024). We begin with 1,100 miles on the odometer & 1.5 years of warranty.
I look forward to discovering any tricks, secrets, and pointers from those of you who have some experience, on this model.
My initial concerns involve the fact that i have never owned a bike of this weight.
The reverse function has been disabled on this bike until a recall fix is introduced, so I currently have to plan on moving the bike around near parking spots sans reverse.
I do hope to gain any awareness, in this forum, as to when such a fix might be arriving from BMW.
I also have hopes of gaining the information I need in order to not fall prey to the usual mistakes & other boneheaded maladies which typically befall new riders of BIG, HEAVY bikes, such as this model.

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your purchase. She is a heavy lady but very well balanced. As soon as she gets rolling you will notice the weight magically disappears. At low speeds or low speeds manoeuvres use the rear brake.
The engine revs fairly low and the torque allows you to be easy on the throttle when pulling away.
Don’t overthink things and let your judgment do what you think is best. Same goes for the reverse gear. If this is the first bike you own with R then keep applying the same model you have used in the past with other bikes.
You will be fine.

Congrats on the new ride. As far as reverse is concerned, I make it a rule to never park on a downhill grade if there are any obstacles in the way. As of right now I have never used the reverse on my R18.

Thanks for the share. I am merely cautious due to the weight of the bike.
I can envision the moment, soon, when I will park my bike in the uneven, front parking area of a famous, local Sunday afternoon haunt, where I will do so in front of no less than 15, mostly-Harley riders, who will also be parked there only 5 to 15 feet away, all watching my every move on this fresh, foreign specimen of a bike.ha. That is one of the “wish me luck” moments in my near future. C’mon members, I *must* get it right……. I could see using the reverse there, if I suddenly have a time parking. (Other than that, I’m sure I can develop a routine w/o the reverse.). Thanks again,

Park like how most Harley Davidson owners do it.. back it in on a downhill or nose it up and in uphill...

I actually use the Reverse after each ride when I arrive back home, I have a tight driveway and funky peak where the driveway and garage come together... Outside of home use, I do the above mentioned..
