Frame piece behind right rear foot peg

Am I correct in assuming that the triangular frame piece is there just to prevent passengers from inadvertently making contact with the drive shaft?

That would be my guess. I removed mine because the drive shaft is one of the coolest things about the bike and I like seeing it better.
 
When my R18C is 50 years old and I have mine in the Mecum Las Vegas Motorcycle auction in 2071,
I will be able to say "Mine is 100% OEM/Stock."
Of course,I'll need to remove the sidecar and take the Corbin seat off.Phew,glad I kept the oem seat.🤡

It's there as a safety for the passenger, if you buy steps later than the triangle comes with the steps. In some counties it is forbidden to have steps without the triangle.
