Purchased an absolutely beautiful '21 R18 FE to add to my '22 "B". Army Ranger purchaser bought it, drove it <200 miles, then was shipped overseas 2 years ago. Son of a friend of ours who signed up for his 3rd tour of duty. I rode it another 200 miles. Today decided to change oil/filter and final drive fluids in the '21 at 400 miles. Did it myself and below is what I found changing the final drive fluid:
My typical anal way to let all fluids drain overnight.
My supplies:
Draining the final drive...yes moly!
Hard to believe this FACTORY FILL "SURPRISE"...and no rear end oil residue, no leaks; DRAINED "250ml", a 40ml overfill !
Cleaned the typical gunk out of the drain plug, new 0-ring; re-installed the plug:
Put in the correct amount of 210ml BMW 70W-80 fluid:
New washer on fill plug and installed:
Except for my anal overnight final drive and engine oil drains...the job took <50 minutes. That includes the correct BMW engine oil/filter and final drive change. The bike was on the Kern-Stabi lift which enabled the process to be an enjoyable job. I kept all the old washers, empty bottles, oil filter, receipts, etc. as the '21 still has 9 months original factory warrantee remaining. Still hard to believe the significant factory final drive overfull! I actually enjoy the more sporty feel/ride and clean "work of art" look of the '21, more than the "B". But that is just my opinion........
