Yeah, I was bummed when I got my bike back from the headlight recall and realized I was gonna have to cough up $200 if I wanted my tune back.

If you get on that thread for the group buy, you’ll save a bit, but I could understand not wanting to dive in. The process isn’t terrible, really. The bike is certainly better with it, but at spicy cost.
How did you know the shop deleted the Brentune? Is there a way to tell without riding the bike?

You and me both, bud. BT tells you to replace the OG tune anytime you go into the shop as you can get "locked out" if the shop overwrites the tune with a factory update. I expected to be able to reload the BT without issue. However, in my experience, I did reload the OG tune before going in and still had trouble. The shop loaded a new tune, and I found the BT tune would not load. Had to cough up $200 for a renewed tune.
... and you are limited as to how many times you can flash the ECU ...

BMW or rather Motorrad should offer stage updates to their bikes like Harley does. Harley has factory performance mods to their bikes. This is a great idea in every respect. A lot of riders once they get used to their bike want to accessorize it. Usually visually and then performance wise. This is a great revenue stream for Harley, keeps the customer happy and coming into the dealership where they see jackets, boots, gloves, et.et.
AND prevents an excessive amount of used bikes to hit the market. If WE could do performance mods to our R18s, the resale of these bikes AND customer satisfaction would skyrocket.
The R18 is a beautiful piece of engineering. But, it could use more power. It could easily handle another 15-25 lbs of torque without putting a strain on the clutch, trans, brakes, et. Another 25-35 Lbs of torque and you ave a real bike !!!

Tell me more please
If you look into the menu of your GS-911 (if you have one) it says how many times the ECU was flashed .. I think the max number is 50 (not 100% sure I would have to look ... too cold in the shop at he moment) I believe mine says 4 times (dealer updates) ... so in other words every time you reset the factory flash to bring it to a dealer you loose one flash .. if the dealer does an update you loose another one .. then you flash it back to Brentune you loose another .. that is 3 flashes per dealer service ... that will add up quickly ... until you hit the max number and then there is no more flashing ...
That and the fact that after a dealer flash you may have to put out more money to get back what yo already payed for ... combined with the small gain dissuaded me from going that route.
But to each his/her own ;)

Thanks for the clarification, indeed this doesn't work in our favor.
My experience with fuelpack in HD was great, even sent my map and got it back ajusted for free!

It is not that they delete the tune. It is the same with the cars if you update your configs with non default settings and they update your iLevel. You will loose all the settings. Basically they load all the ECUs with default settings.

As the other responder said, they don’t delete it. They flash a new factory tune. If you reflashed the stock tune before going in, they have no clue anything was done. If you didn’t, they probably still don’t have a clue, but it gets overridden.

If you happened to leave the tune on when you took your bike in, you’d know it was gone by plugging up the BT unit and reading the ECU.

This would be seriously awesome. Harley’s whole thing is to build bikes that need upgrades, it seems. So there’s a whole market second to the actual bike that Harley makes a killing on. They move huge numbers. BMW doesn’t, at least not of the R18. There’s not enough market. Even here, I wonder the percentage of folks who’ve attempted the available performance mods versus those happy with the stock bike.

I can tell you, I’ve rarely met a Harley rider who wasn’t all goobered up and excited to tell you every single mod he’d done.
