BMW gives up the R18 !!!!

Reminds me of this movie. Please understand, I'm not saying anything about the context of your quote. I'm just remembering a good old movie. This thread seems to have derailed though.

 
Think we have to applaud that as motorcyclists there is still plenty of choice for us, across all the brands. Whether new or used there is something for everyone. The popularity of the GS is without doubt offsetting many of BMW’s other bikes that don’t sell so well but that’s a good thing. I could have a GS if I wanted one, but I don’t.
 
I'm guessing the R18 is selling better in other countries than it is in the US but that's just a guess. Would be interesting to know
 
Today’s kids have AI, Google, video games, porn, smart phones, Facebook,
and a host of amenities that my parents never knew.
Kids that grew up in rural settings in the 1940’s (both of my parents) did not have electricity or indoor plumbing.
The point is people then had to work hard just to get bye.
Now most things are free. You can walk out of Walmart with stolen goods and no one does a thing.

Mmm... I'm 63 and have those things.... so I'm a kid! Cooool..... Oops.... of course I'm to old for porn.... and kids don't really do facebook.

And.... since when did Walmart sell stolen goods....

Australia is much the same as the US R18 sales wise..... generally, we can't think for ourselves. Good news for me was that I got one of my favourite life time top 4 bikes el'cheapo!

Did you just compare Iraq to Normandy? You cannot be serious.
I know your next question. I deployed to Iraq, and have a son in the Army, and a son in the Navy.

I didn't take his comment as a comparison of the combat environment or battle space of the two conflicts. I read his comment as a recognition that young people stepped up to the line. I am not trying to argue the point as we all have our perspectives but I don't think the intent was to denigrate but to respect them.

'Bullets don't care' is cute but pointless. A U.S. soldier landing on D-Day faced about 15 times higher risk of being killed in one day than a U.S. soldier deployed to Iraq over the entire 8-year war.

And that number is only important from (1) a planning perspective, and (2) a historical persepective. It is about meaningless to guys getting shot at.
"Cute" is belittling and offensive... don't make this discussion a personal attack.

Based on such comments as yours it seems there is the opinion that today's youth are unworthy of their forebearers sacrifices and incapable of choosing to make somilar sacrifices. Again, broad generalizations that ignore human behaviors and history.

My R18 is beautiful.
But the ride was not beautiful until I added…..
1) Weekender seat
2) Jurock 18 inch shield with Memphis Shades fork deflectors
3) Modified R1200c handlebars
4) Custom feet forward floor boards

The ride is beautiful now.
 
I sat on, what I consider to be one of the rarest R18's out there on Friday. A R18 Rocktane. At 6'5", it just kills my hips with how close it is to the floor boards when I put my feet up. Also, compared to my R1250 RT at 615#, she's a mighty beast at my age, 67, to get to stand upright off of the side stand. I just love the looks of the R18 B, but I just can't find a way to comfortably sit on it without my knees feeling too high up, and in the way.

My next thought was what would the bike be like from a riders perspective for torque, if BMW built the bike with an engine with more of a stroker design, under bore, and a longer stroke. How would it feel off of idle, just barely rolling into the throttle and dumping the clutch? Because that right there, is the only thing I miss about my Harley 107 Sport Glide. Massive, massive torque right off of idle, it was almost impossible to stall the Sport Glide.
