3rd party oil filter for the R18?

Has anyone found and used a 3rd party oil filter for our R18's?
Time to change oil and I just realized I am 180 miles for a BMW filter, and wish to change before Friday.

Basically, it looks like you can get four (4) filters for the BMW price of a single oil filter..

If you only need a single filter, it looks like Amazon can delivery it overnight...

I haven't use the following; but a quick search, shows that K&N makes oil filters for the R18.

I'm not sure how fast you can get one delivered?

I know a little older post but I use the K&N and they work great--much easier to remove with using just a socket instead of an oil filter adaptor

Just today I tried to buy a KN filter at the local Yamaha/Kawasaki dealer. They didn’t have it.
So phoned BMW dealer 170 miles away and paid $28 plus tax plus $5 shipping.

For one there is no panic for an oil/filter change
and secondly the alternative filters will do.

The most important is the oil itself and fill up the filter before fitting.

I am very cautious about using K&N filters anymore. Over the last 5 years I have had 4 different K&N filters on both cars and motorcycles develop pinhole leaks where the removal nut is welded to the filter body. These leaks developed a little while after installing the filters. On one bike the leak developed while riding and it oiled up my boot and rear wheel. It is lucky that I noticed this before it caused me to crash. K&N offered me replacement filters - I did not accept.

You can buy the MAHLE OC-306 filters on Rock Auto for $8.56 These are also used on the BMW I3 gas/electric auto.

No such issue for me over about 10 years ... hopefully they adjusted their processes so it never happened again.

For me it is not worth the risk using them on a motorcycle.

I haven't used the K&N filter. It has a nut for easy removal. Does it, the nut, protrude enough the it could get hit in a low clearance situation?

is there any chance the bolt on the k&n filter sticks out enough to get hit going over an obsticle?

No, looks to be flush to me--the stock one is inset a little which makes it even harder to get out

I preffer my filter recessed in a bit..... so no k&n for me. It took 4 of us (me and 3 new friends) to drag this back.



Front wheel ABS didn't like the shaley surface..... a quick stop/poor decision after a neck wasp sting.

Pretty sure the wasp was much bigger then the one on the lhs of this photo.....
