Afternoon everyone. Well, after a lot of consideration and keen interest in what’s been discussed on the forum this last year (dwindling stocks of new bikes) I decided a while ago to try and bag myself a 2nd R18. I’ve had my eye on a particular red one for about 6 months and been in contact with that dealer (in person) every 4 weeks or so asking if they are doing any deals on it yet, without success. It was listed at full MSRP for quite a while. Anyhow, over the last few days I’ve been back & forth making my case again that it really needs to come home with me now and blow me down, I got a phone call this morning offering me a great deal, so I’ve gone for it and bought it, I am absolutely chuffed to bits. Will have to move some stuff in the garage to get it in next to my Roctane but that’s a job for the weekend. I love the Mars Red combination with the grey engine/satin finishes. It looks gorgeous (to me anyway). Hope you like it 👍

Looks great. You are a lucky guy and persistence pays off, right? Are you keeping the Roctane? I have a 2021 FE and am thinking of adding the Roctane to my collection. The make a great pair. Woops, added an old Harley by mistake. I have too many bikes now...

Yep, keeping the Roctane. I’ve spent the last two days moving stuff around and having a clear out in the garage to make room. That Harley looks nice 👍

Thanks. Let me know how the 2 compare for riding around town, which is all I do these days, or an occasional trip to the coast on the twisties. Also, if you have time and are so inclined, send a photo of the pair. my fiends think I am crazy for buying a 2nd R18 but I love the style and comfort. They think it’s completely insane and redundant but then they don’t house Harleys and BMW’s and Ducatis under the same roof. Enjoy!

Hi David.

These are my subjective thoughts. Roctane is physically a lot bigger, it’s noticably taller, rides higher and you sit higher in the bike. Standard seat is a lot more comfortable and the suspension is more plush. Don’t know why, it just is.

R18 feels a lot lighter than the 30kg difference, in every way, almost ‘nimble’ 😂, the exhaust note is slightly different, a touch quieter but still very nice (to my ears). The pegs would grind out more easily than the Roctane in tight bends, no doubt about it, but it’s easy to make adjustments and avoid it. Mine has lovely chrome fishtails and I personally prefer the looks of the spoked wheels, satin silver engine finishes and of course the gorgeous red colour with pinstripes. All very subjective and personal to taste of course.

I love them both, for slightly different reasons. Honestly I don’t know which I would let go if I really had to, flip a coin probably. Regarding town work, well, either would be fine but the side cases on the Roctane are very wide at the back (same width as cylinder heads) so if it will pass while filtering traffic you are good to go but you could forget and catch a vehicle if not careful. Know what I mean.

I genuinely plan to keep these two, especially now that they are sort of discontinued, they have all the qualities I want and like in a bike and are sufficiently different in looks and riding experience that it doesn’t bother me at all, quite the opposite actually. Good luck with your decision 👍

Thanks for the feedback. I knew the weight and bars were a lot different but did not realize the subjective feeling of size mattered so much. How is getting used to the heel-toe shifter? I had one on an HD and liked it but it took some getting used to…

Yea the heel n toe, it took me a few hundred miles to be able to change gear without thinking about it tbh (muscle memory if you like) but now that I have I absolutely love it. I quickly abandoned trying to ride using just the front peg, like on a regular gear change, although it can be done (just). Getting my toe under the peg was a faff and not at all comfortable. Think they really suit the bike and I find the footboards very comfortable. Don’t think I’d ever want it on a normal bike or roadster though but on these heavy cruisers where a lightning fast change isn’t really appropriate they are a great fit (IMHO). Adds to the occasion of the ride.

Heel&toe imo is as functional as you choose it to be.
Mine has pegs, no boards and I added the second lever mostly because
The lever does not get in the way and sometimes it is easier, more direct.
At Wünderlich prices I think vfm loses out. Chinese win-wins: At very little money I have it available if I want and it looks better imo.

They are both gorgeous. I really enjoy my Roctane. It’s in for its 1sr service at the moment. Taking an extended time due to a transmission fluid leak. Left spots on my brand new concrete. Looking forward to getting it back and putting more miles on it. My dealer does have one more R18 left but I don’t think I will add a 2nd. Hummmm…. lol.

They do take some getting used to. This is my 3rd with one so other than adjusting for my feet I think this one is great. Excellent shifting transmission. Just need to stop it from leaking.
