    about mc clothing

No R18 but any R18 rider would have been the same ;) Enjoy.

    Crash bars

What is it with 'crash' bars? They are ubiquitous, all but obligatory it seems. BMW (boxers) even more so than most brands. Currently looking at buying a older solo bike, BMW. Something easy and gentle. Per example an R27 or an R45. The striking thing is that no R27 has crash bars but all, and...

    wind deflection

I bought my black&white oil head because it is retro and I am adding retro details. It needs no explanation that even the most rudimentary windshield would improve comfort above say 80 km/h. It makes me realize how recent this is. I mean the period the R18 is homaging had nóóó such apart from...

Sign of the times .... and progressing insight

The apparently immortal Ural has as we all know BMW heritage. Those lucky enough to have experience with BMW as well as Ural will recognize the part in the photo below, lovingly dubbed the Laurel & Hardy disc. Ah the memories 🫣

    Luxury (no)problem :-)

I have a ´22 base R18 to which I mounted a sidecar. Added a valanced mud guard, a metal oil cooler cover, an extended reverse lever and a cute luggage rack matching that on the sidecar boot. It looks réally classic, retro, vintage. So much so that surprisingly many think it ís vintage. The...

    Centre of gravity

Has anyone encountered the hight of the entre of gravity of the R18? A pretty good guestimate is that it is about 50 cm. hight but it remains a loose number with too much margin for meaningful calculation.

    Clever design?

During the sidecar build I have started and parked the engine a few times without driving/warming properly. I have noted that the catalytic converters leak/drain the water which is produced by the chemical conversion. That seems a clever design as there is nó gas leak.

    about ´guards´

The after market guard of all and sundry are a popular, dare I say fashionable, modification. Each his own obviously but please be aware that the protection is relative. Let me explain: First there is the Peltzman effect and a guard should NOT make you less cautious. Then there is the...

These boots are made for... ríding.

But which ones actually? Sofar done with desert booties and sturdy nubuck lace up ankle boots. Both from deep in the previous century and both are well beyond their end date. Both were very worn in so ditto comfie but in all honesty a bit low. So looking at boots. Not keen on dedicated...

    The R18 sidecar thread

There seem to be half a dozen of R18 sidecar combis on the forum and at least two work in progress. Since sidecars are something else, I thought it appropriate to open a separate thread and join the info. As such I will try put some of the links to other threads in here as well. Point is case...

    Speedometer ´error´

Yes, another one. Yes, used the search engine. As all I get are a older hence a new thread. Flogging the bike down the local pass the speedometer read 195 km/h. I know the speedomete by law reads fast with quite bit of margin to compensate for variables. Also the bike is limited to 180 km/h...

    Riding/touring Spain.

Buenos compañeros. Very regularly I get mail enquiring about a holliday in Spain on a motorbike. Not just from the R18 forum. As it is all rather different from the UK I want to point out a few generic aspects. Spain is about square, say 1.2k kms north-south and 1k west-east with that being a...

Back when the very first hand held Garmin GPS came out I was an early adopter because I often went cross country. Cróss country as in...

to chinese or no to chinese

When you buy from a seller in China, you know the product is Made in China. When you buy from a manufacturar in say Spain with in house production, you know it is Made in Spain. Buying something from a European or US based after market seller, no matter how renowned, you may get Made in...

...and now for something completely different

    - Monty Python. (vintage UK satirical; do look it up on youtube; not linking one as sómeone is sure to wiggle long toes under a politcally incorrect sómething) Right so there is a bloke mud pathing the R18 shod on knobblies. Also one in a bagger race. Sofar no wheelie (front wheel in the air)...

    The haters´ magnifying glass

In 2016 BMW shows an R5 ´homage´ which in 2019 grows a modern engine and in 2020 prooves to be a new addition to their production model range. It is to all extends and purposes a BMW. Well engineered with attention to detail of all aspecst of a motorcycle. Well built and finished with quality...
