I test rode the base R18, Classic & Bagger before buying the Classic. The Classic with the higher front tire sidewall is marginally more compliant over bumps. Not enough to buy to replace for ride quality alone. I preferred the look of the Classic’s wheel & tire, so I bought the Classic. I...
I have the Weekender made by Mustang for BMW. Much better than stock, without looking like a bad toupee laying on the bike. For me it is the right balance of looks and comfort. Easily supports multi hundred mile days.
If you regularly plan on iron butt 1000 mile days or have a particularly...
A good quality cover will breathe, similar to Goretex. Cheaper covers can trap moisture under them resulting in rust and mold. Some covers even have soft touch inside.
My bikes are all in a garage, but I use Oxford indoor covers (Dormex) on each if they won’t be ridden for more than a few...
I got the Mustang Weekender & left the pillion seat on my shelf. I have a Wunderlich rack where the pillion would normally go. I picked the Weekender as it was two pieces, so I could avoid adding the pillion. My Weekender pillion is still in the original plastic wrap. There is no harm in not...
You can retrofit the cruise control IF it was a later production Base R18 FE. The very earliest Base FE units didn’t have the same main control unit that the Classics had where CC was intended as an option. It requires the different switch gear and a flash/module add on. Some of the later...
The Base R18 & Classic are nearly the same bike, so most parts can cross-over. The biggest difference is the exhaust. The Classic bags won’t fit on a Base R18 with the stock Base R18 exhaust. It goes up too high. If you switch to the Classic exhaust, everything would bolt right up.
I use Max in southern CT. Always has treated me well. I’m not yet at a 6K on my R18, but on both my S1000R and my GS they are no more than $500. I did my annual on the R18 and it was about $300. Harder with the R18, but they also do pick up and drop off service for free in winter. I don’t mind...
Not unusual. Refunding to original payment source after a while isn't possible, typically 30-90 days after purchase. Store credit is very common if the period is beyond the payment refund window. Beyond the payment processor limitations, it can also affect their books if it is beyond when...
They will only fit on other Classic bikes stock. The fairing models have completely different rear ends with stock hard bags.
If you are including the lower mount bars that are near the exhaust, an R18 Pure owner could grab them if they replace the stock exhaust with the one on the classic...
Outex kits are great for converting dirt wheels which are mostly tubed to being tubeless. This can also work for some adventure bikes. The caveat is the sealing at each spoke nib is limited. It's fundamentally a piece of tape, so any gaps or adhesion loss could cause a pressure loss. Not a...
Depends on your definition of tinkering & cosmetic is. Generally speaking the largest fasteners will be for control or major components. Torque values go up with fastener size. Think what connects the engine to the frame, handlebar & foot peg mounts. Cosmetic only elements will be smaller...
Do you have a picture of what it looked like stock? My Classic is a First Edition package, so mine is full chrome there. The Pure with First Edition package also has chrome there. I seen some non First Edition bikes in dealerships, but can’t say I noticed what was in the tank insert area.
As you mentioned in OP, many on this site already have an R18. Have you posted elsewhere? Spring is coming soon, so you’ll probably have more interest as it starts to warm up.
This is why it’s hard to recommend seats over the internet. Everyone will have a bit different body distribution. I have long arms & long legs for my height. Those with a different makeup for the height will have a different experience.
In my case, the issue is my hip is lower than my knee...
I’m 6’4” and have the Weekender on my Classic. With the stock seat the bike was 45 minutes max, while it is all day with the Weekender.
I do agree it would be good if it was slightly further set back, but I’d actually prefer if it was slightly taller, as the knee angle is the challenge for me.
That’s not a stock item. Possible that your dealer wired in an external charge plug. For example, here is an Optimate version: https://www.amazon.com/Optimate-Monitor-Permanent-Integrated-Lithium/dp/B00Y38X8WW/ref=asc_df_B00Y38X8WW/
This will indicate the current state of charge of the...
The reserve is about 1 gallon, so I typically expect to be empty within ~44 miles (my average MPG across all tanks). I aim to refill within 20 miles after reserve comes on so I don’t come close to running dry. On my R18 Classic, the reserve usually comes on around 130 miles into the tank.
On...
Also keep in mind the riding mode builds in some roughness as well. Rock mode will be the most character with a distinctive idle shake. Roll is much smoother. If I find myself stuck on the highway at steady speeds, I switch it to roll & the bike is smoother. But if I’m riding fun backroads...
I’ve scraped the pegs twice on my R18 classic. I have an S1000R as well, so I’d don’t exactly ride my R18 super laid back either. Both times I was really trying to get it to scrape. Once was in a roundabout, the other was a 90 degree corner on a backroad. In both cases, I was >50MPH to make...
