I installed the leg fairings on my bike over the weekend. Huge Improvement. They keep the air from coming up under the fairing, which causes helmet buffeting at Highway speeds. I have the Clock Werks windshield, which isn't very tall but it has a nice lip on the top that helps move the air up...
Here are some pictures of what it looks like when you remove the side covers and get into the airbox area. I thought some of you would like to see what it looks like in there.
When you remove the plates, it gives you access to the 2 bolts that secure the upper engine cases to the engine block on each side. So I believe this was the intended design. I'm just taking advantage of the addition benefits of the openings.
The dyno is a tool. When used correctly, it can be very helpful. We used this session to see if there are any gains to be had. That's all. No tuning, just testing and measuring the results. And the before and after results were good. I wish the tuner from BT Tuning had the ability to data log...
Hi guys. Yes we did have three fans blowing on the bike during the dyno test. I'll include some images so you can see. We estimate the airspeed to be around 45 to 50 mph to simulate the bike moving down the road. I've also included some images of the 3D printed prototypes we experimented with.
The horsepower game was about two HP but the torque gain was six foot pounds. It's not a lot but it proves that the hot air in the airbox area needs to be vented so that the engine can gulp cooler air. I think with mods such as a catless exhaust, they'll be even more to gain due to more cooler...

I could use FrogSkin but it will add to the cost. Bug and mice can easily crawl in the front vent openings also as well as other areas. I've found mice in the strangest places in motorcycles and snowmobiles over the years....
Great points and I agree, this is a low rpm engine designed for torque, not HP. Harleys have notoriously restrictive cylinder heads. The 117 is much better than in the past. But cams and better heads move the power into the upper RPM ranges. So you do give some here to gain elsewhere.
