2023 R18 100 year anniversary edition
I have a very tiny ding on the tank of my 23 Anniversary model. It's not bad and can probably be worked out once the tank is off the bike. Otherwise the tank is perfect.
I'm replacing the entire tank rather than fixing it....because I'm partially insane and keep my bikes in showroom condition. My new tank will arrive any day, and I will be offering this one of someone is interested.

I think a lot of people would just live with it...but I want t keep the bike like the day I got it. Currently has about 850 miles on it.

Let me know if there is interest out there. The new tank is $5693 plus labor, not cheap because of the paint scheme. Thinking maybe $1500 plus shipping....

Thanks.

Randy!!! I have had dents in my car door many times worse and a dent repair person came to the house and magically repaired it 100% for <$100 and 30 minutes time! He was on his way to a major car dealer to fix dents in trade-ins and a couple of new cars. He said new cars arrive at dealerships all the time with dents repaired and buyers never notice because the dents are gone! Not that I believe that is good business to sell an unknowing buyer without advising the fact! They perhaps offer a substantial discount?

Thanks, yes I know. But for starters the tank has to come off the bike.....I filed an insurance claim and am paying the deductible, so I'm getting a new tank...

But thanks.

Just thinking out loud: why is the tank so expensive?
I understand the shape is complex and contains some technical parts (fuel pump, I guess).
But... More than 3000$?

Is there some information I miss?

Agree with above, I would at least try to get that very minor dent removed before considering a replacement. I know you’ve already made that decision and if it’s the right thing for you to do no problem. Seems to me though main dealer ‘anything’ can be eyewateringly expensive especially if insurance is involved because it’s just a racket.

Scary thought, at $5693 (never mind any labour costs) that’s approaching half the trade in value and i can foresee bikes being written off for negligible damage, like falling off its stand. Dent in tank, scratched fishtail, bent lever = scrapper 😬

I thought the same thing. Apparently the paint scheme on this tank warrants the price??? To have it absolutely perfect like the day I bought the bike, I would need a tank from the factory.....

I thought $2000 would be a lot....but the tank reinstalled with labor is like $6600...completely insane....

The ding is the result of a freak event. Someone threw something while the bike was parked outside a swanky restaurant. It put the small ding in the tank. I ran it by my insurance co. By some miracle they decided to replace the tank since the bike is brand new. I really lucked out with this particular adjuster. It still cost me $1000...deductible.

Wow, that’s a lot of money Randy no matter how you look at it.
Yeah, I know....and I know the market pretty much on bikes and cars. For a few grand more I can buy a nice used bike.
It's a psychological thing....Covid 19 closed the entire industry I'm in for a good two years, and it's only recovered about 25-30%. This kicked my ass financially and psychologically. I have a nice lifestyle in Los Angeles that requires a healthy income stream. I've been fortunate. Meanwhile I just turned 68 and don't have the energy to start over in business....
So what does any of his have to do with the bike and the absurd price for the tank....??
I kinda feel like everything is in not only in turmoil, but life is degrading. This includes the political climate in America which is dicey in my view. In short the bike is kind of a refuge, one thing I want to keep pristine....something the shitstorm of life can't touch....
I don't know if it makes any sense....but that's why I went to the ridiculous expenditure .....

Makes perfect sense, having control over something that brings you joy and pleasure in this crazy upside down world.

Parts are insane on these bikes. If you built one piecemeal it would probably cost 300 to 500 thousand.
This particular tank has the chrome sides, white stripes, and black metallic paint. I just got lucky in a way that the insurance adjuster agreed that since the bike was brand new 800 miles, and that the bike had a special paint scheme, no body shop could get it like factory. My previous insurance company never in a million years would have paid for a new factory tank ( minus the deductible) which still cost me $1000....

The bike is a luxury. None of this crap is a necessity. If I had left the ding...in the scheme of things who to hell cares. I'll drop dead with the bike in the garage one day. My wife will do something really stupid with it like everything I have. But, as long as I am riding....it's all in the details....

Was thinking about replacing the Roctane 16 liter tank by a 24 liter tank from the TransContinental.
But... 3000$ just for the tank itself...
Maybe later.

Im not sure what the trade in value is on the 100 yr editions.
I have one too and have no idea what they are worth, haven't seen one for sale but have never really looked.
That process of chrome and paint is very expensive and I think BMW pioneered it.
I was told the whole tank is chromed and their process is to paint the black on.
The trick in the process is getting the paint to stick to the chrome.

Awhile back a guy I know who made his R18 into a bobber wanted the chrome and black tank and he told me BMW quoted him over 5k and he passed.
:)

I'm not sure what the Anniversary Model resale is either...probably not that good frankly as the world economy is NOT good and it effects spending habits of people that can afford to waste money. Economies are part
psychological, which is why a stock can trade 200 times actual value while another stock in reality worth the same trades at ten times value...
Anyway...Yeah the tank costs around $5600....then with labor another 650. Crazy expensive.....My insurance surprisingly agreed to replace the tank.....

I'm at the point in life where things don't need to make any kind of rational sense or add up.

I was at the dealer selling them my pristine R9T 2014 when I saw the poster of the 23 Anniversary model. They got two all year, some dealers don't get any, and they had one still in the crate.
They prepped it the next day and I went back to ride it. I wasn't crazy about how it rode, but the bike was so beautiful I bought it anyway....which is why I want to keep it showroom condition regardless of what it's worth....
BTW, I sold the tank coming off the bike. I'm pretty sure the small ding can come out without a big production....
