And BMW voids your warranty
I confess I don't know how it works outside of the United States, but BMW cannot void your warranty here if you do your own service on the bike, unless they can prove you made an unauthorized modification or was negligent in the performance of the service, such as leaving a drain plug loose.

We have specific consumer protection laws that don't allow them to do that. For instance, if I bought a new bike and changed out the air intake and air cleaner to an aftermarket brand, they can't void my warranty for that.

For what it’s worth, owners of 2024 Road Glides have just been notified of a recall concerning a wiring harness issue that can lead to shorting of the electrical system. Article here.

While I don’t know what actions or communication preceded the official recall notice, we’re certainly not alone in shit just not working how it should.

Got a call from the dealer today. They let me know that they can now sell me an R18 as long as I sign a document accepting that the reverse will be disabled until the recall fix can be implemented. The description I got today of the error condition is that the seal around the reverse selector lever may leak allowing water to get to the electronics. If this occurs it could obviously cause a short which could result in either damaged electronics or a fire.

Also, came across a comment on the R18 Bagger group on Facebook that stated something about the reverse issue being related to possible liquid entry into the module leading to corrosion and possible shorting or failure. This is similar to what I was told by my selling dealer’s shop manager, so perhaps there’s something there.

Makes me wonder if they're not suffering the "Boeing Syndrome"...

It doesnt sound as if that many pp here have actually run into an real issue beyond being a bit glicky to get into gear. So how big of a concern is it really?

I know they have had multiple electrical issues on the 2024 Road and Street Glides. The new infotainment systems is really good on those bikes, but they don't seem to have the bugs worked out yet. I know of two different guys that had to have complete new wiring harnesses installed due to issues.

Does the reverser recall include the the K1600 GTLs or do they have a different reverse method?

Reverse on the K1600 is engaged by pushing a button on the left side controls. Then you use the starter to back the bike up. I would guess that it uses the same electronics, but the engagement is different. Since the K1600 doesn't have a lever to engage the reverse gear, it shouldn't have any issues given that the root of the problem is the seal on the lever shaft.

Well, my reverse sucks. It is hard to get it to work, hard to get it to stop working. I can still back up an 800 pound bike any way I want because I didn’t skip leg day :-) I never thought much about it. But clearly something is amiss. If it gets recalled I’ll have it addressed

The reverse on the R18 Classic I got from the dealer for a test drive worked flawlessly.
Strange enough I seem not to be able to engage the one on my brand new R18 100 years edition...
Whatever I do, the 'R' keeps blinking. Bike is not on a slope, no brake or clutch lever pulled.
Maybe I need to fiddle with it more.

Note to self.... make sure not to urinate whilst riding*, otherwise one could go up in flames.

*note: for the record, I normally don't, but we are all geting older so no harm making notes.

See this?

The recall is now in the UK... Had a message from my dealership last night advising the 18 needs to come in for a factory recall. Just spoke to them and they have confirmed the reverse gear needs disconnecting and that a likely fix won't be available until the latter part off next year!!!

The latter part of next year?? That's.... a long time.

From Australia. My 2 bikes will be going in next week for the de-activation of reverse, and I'll take up the 3 years free servicing on each bike.
The dealer indicated that a fix would probably be in at the end of the 4th quarter of 2024.
3 years of free servicing might make it worthwhile. I've used reverse exactly 3 times in a year, so if they wanna do my maintenance here in the US for three years to put me out of reverse, I might be into that. The other deal I've heard, of $1000 in BMW Bucks, doesn't sound as attractive. Especially when the 6,000 mile service is like $700 or so at my shop.

The lever for reverse is definitely engaging a reverse gear. If it feels bound up, it probably needs the bike to rolled slightly to reposition the gears in the transmission. This is not completely uncommon of a manual transmission car. It occasionally happens on my 6 speed WRX. I don't think that is a condition that the recall will address.
