It’s not about parking downhill or other silly mistakes, the reverse is really useful when you have no choice. I have to ride into my garage and obviously reverse out, but my drive is gravel and I would say to you come over and have a go pushing 374kg backwards for me, its really not easy and gravel is also slippery underfoot. The reverse makes it a piece of cake. Just because you don’t see any need doesn’t mean it’s the same for everyone. Not having a go just saying, this reverse saga has been a real PITA. Glad the end is near.
I did use my reverse daily to get mine in my garage. Not that it was necessary, but as a connivence since I had it. I could pull the bike straight in (like I have to do now) and turn it around if the cars are out. But I like the option of being able to just back in the garage and I can not do it without the reverse due to the slight incline in my driveway. I do not have reverse on my other bikes so I know how to not put myself in situations I can't handle. So I do love my reverse and will be glad to get it back.

Agreed... I use Reverse after each ride; where I also back my R18 into my garage, which also has a slight incline.

I'll most likely have new tires put on my bike when I take it in for the new and improved reverse module; it sounds like the new relay module also requires a software update based on the recall bulletin.

The reverse feature is one of those functions that I would likely never use. I learned decades ago to never park a bike facing downhill.

Two things come to mind about this. While BMW bikes have the best mechanics of any brand and are the best looking, it is interesting to me how BMW tends to over-engineer things that needlessly raise prices.
Hi there,
I think everybody has bike that is 250kg or more has to "aim" to a suitable spot when parking.
At least it's happening to me in the last 25 years of riding.
So I was thinking too that the reverse is something pointless and a waste of money,
but now I have to admit that sometime saved the situation and also now when I get to some tortuous place,
I don't have to look around for spot... like I have a car :)

So... I can live without, but now I'm happy to have it !
I mean... have it back, when they fix it.

I, too, am glad the fix is coming. I occasionally use reverse to make some situations easier, usually in tight spots with limited maneuvering room.
BUT (to change the discussion a bit) I do wish the reverse was geared a bit lower. I find the reverse speed is a bit too fast for comfort and ease and find I have to 'bump' it in reverse (similar to feathering the clutch) so the bike doesn't move faster than my legs and head-swivel can keep up! Maybe if I had those shoes that had skate wheels built in to them! 🤣

I repent. The reverse feature is well liked and appreciated by a host of riders.
No need to repent as I feel the same as you do. I can see the feature is quite useful for those that use it and love it. Like you, I have been riding for over 40 years now and just learned how to avoid the need to backup, such as steep driveways,
odd parking lot configurations, and gravel / mud scenarios. I have been used to toe dragging and brake feathering to just go backwards when needed. But I can certainly agree that once we start using it, it would be a must feature but for now I couldn’t care less.

Reverse in isolation is not a safety issue. The issue is that the electrics may corrode and there is a risk of a cascade affect on other on-board systems which could potentially be catostrophic. That's why there is a mandated deactivation of this system until BMW can redesign and configure the replacement component.
I'm with you Aussie-Hoss. I have avoided taking my R18b in for the "mandated deactivation" for several reasons: The dealer is 75 miles away. Physically, I absolutely require the reverse drive, I purchased the r18 because it had a reverse gear. I'll wait until BMW has a final solution. The headlight was prior to the recall and that "warranty" repair was (3 attempts) 450 miles over several months for the dealer could not get the headlight from BMW. At least BMW owned up to these repairs, much different than my R1200 final drive failure.

Ok, update for UK owners. Great news, literally just come off the phone with my nearest BMW dealer. They rung me! Fix is in, my bike is being collected 19 Feb, free of charge, taken in to fix and being returned the next day. They need it for a few hours apparently but tbh don’t care. Hoo rah. Hoping you guys get contacted aswell 👍

Got my notice for a fix in the mail today in Sweden. Never got any letter regarding the disconnection of the reverse so still connected.
So that’s here UK, Sweden & Italy that have the fix in (albeit only three of us so far but it’s a start). Hopefully over the next few weeks this will really open up to get everyone who wants it booked in.

My dealer said "the solution is ready". Just wait a little bit more!!!
Hopefully because I am trying to sell my R18TC and put it on Cycle Trader and I've lost 2 interested buyers when I told them reverse is disabled by the BMW service due to a recall. One guy said "I sure would like to have that reverse on a 1000 lb bike I am getting" and backed off...
C'mon BMW, if I lose one more buyer I'll try to sell it back to you guys!
Kidding aside, I hope they come up with a solution at any day now!
