Hello All, I have a 2023 R18 Basic/Pure, that's loaded with many extras except for reverse gear. I'm reading on the forum that the reverse gear recall is being addressed. So now, I'm wondering if anyone knows if it's possible to retrofit a reverse gear on a non-reverse gear equipped bike? If so, what's involved?

I just assumed that all R18s had the reverse. The exploded view of the reverse mechanism makes me think it not possible.

Don’t think I’ve ever come across a UK bike without reverse, my understanding was it was only the US that had the option on the reverse, not sure why, could be wrong, probably am….

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately no, my USA 2023 R18 does not have the reverse gear option. Just trying to determine if it's possible to retro-fit a reverse gear mechanism. So, reverse runs off the starter motor, right? Is this enabled by the addition of a separate motor, wiring harness, switch? For those who have had their reverse gear sorted out by BMW, can you describe the fix/solution? Best.

I don’t recall a thread from anyone on the forum retro fitting the reverse to their bike but I’m sure it must be possible, like everything though it’s all about cost. As far as I know the starter motor does the reversing, there is only one motor.

In simple terms, when you reach down to physically move the reversing lever it physically disables the starter motor gear from the flywheel and engages with an additional mechanism to move the bike backwards. You actually use the starter motor button to do this and an ‘R’ pops up on the instrument cluster. It is idiot proof.

The recall you’ve read about was nothing to do with it, that was to do with possible water ingress/corrosion to the electronics and so a ‘fix’ has been developed by BMW and that is being rolled out now all over the world. My bike has been done about a fortnight ago. Threads exist on this topic.

Now, it must be said many owners never use reverse (even though they have it on their bikes) and others (like me) do because of a specific need, in my case a gravel drive in & out of the garage. I’ve never once used it out & about. If you don’t need it don’t worry about it and use the bike like you would any other, thinking about where you do turns, park up, off cambers etc.

In the absence of anyone chiming in to advise you I would go to your dealer and speak with the workshop tech, see what they say. There will have to be software/firmware updates for sure for the bike to recognise the changes so even if you were to take it on yourself I reckon you’d have to go to the dealer anyway.

Hope that lot makes sense. Good luck with it.👍

Sorry ... there are 2 electric motors on 18s with reverse .. one is the starter and one for the reverse.

The Reverse module, and or the entire system is actually a pretty complex system; there's a couple of micro switches, logic and actual gearing that inter connects within the transmission...

It certainly as simple as thought it was... It wasn't until I started looking at it more closely...

I'm still shocked that your bike doesn't have the Reverse option... Have you taken an exploratory look, in order to determine what's there and what isn't...? (Reverse motor, reverse module, etc..)

There's some other post concerning the Reverse Recall, which has lots of pictures... I restored my Reverse functionality, after I had the Recall Campaign Completed and collected my $1k in accessories..

Yes, no reverse gear on my USA R18 Basic. Here's a photo. Just a blank panel, and I've been all over the electronics on this bike to add a Hex EZ Can for auxiliary lighting, brake lights, and USB charging ports. Best.

I am actually a bit surprised to hear that, when I first dabbled with the thought of a R 18 I had the dealer check it out if there is a 'no reverse' option (to lower the price) and was told 'no' ... BMW must have changed their mind since '21 ... This said, are these pegs stock? If not could you post a link to them ... I think I like them 😀

Yeah, I don't see the small curve out on the panel that host the DC charger/accessory plug; it looks like you somehow, purchased the one R18 without Reverse...

The below image shows the starter motor (Call Out No.5 symbol) and the Reverse motor (Call Out No.6 symbol); I'm curious if your bike has the Reverse motor in place?

My 2021 Classic FE does not have reverse, but it has cruise control and heated grips, both of which I highly recommend.
