R18 Transcontinental
Greetings everyone. Thank you for the add. I'm new to BMW motorcycles, but have had a series of the cars. I'm also new to the touring market after many years of liter sport bikes. After several months of research and shopping, I've decided to purchase a new Transcontinental over a Harley Road Glide only to find out BMW isn't currently selling the R18's due to an in progress recall. Hopefully they'll have that worked out soon and I can take delivery of a new R18.

My understanding is that it involves the seal for the reverse selector. I was told by two separate dealers, that they are under a do not sell order from BMW until all in-stock units are corrected.

Welcome to the forum and hopefully you will be able to take that TC home.
If you cannot wait, do look elsewhere (private sellers) and see if you find a good specimen reasonably priced. The TC is not that all so you should be able to find one with low mileage and possibly under warranty within your range.
Good luck. 👊

Welcome aboard.. maybe scoop up a used TC bike; maintenance is super simple:

Thanks, I've been looking around. BMW has some significant rebates and special financing for the R18 right now, so I'm hoping to take advantage of that. If this drags on, there are a couple of used ones at dealers in the area. The season is winding down, so I'm guessing sales will follow. That should help me get a better deal too.

Thanks, happy to be here with other R18 enthusiasts. Also, I really appreciate all the maintenance data. I typically do all my own routine maintenance, so this will be really helpful.

If the R18 TC is like the rest, you should shop used. Many of those who did not like them, sell them for considerably less than new.

I have seen many R 18s selling for way less than new on both cycle trader and Facebook marketplace. Have seen specially load classics for 17K and regular classics 10-12K. Happily loving my 2023 R 18 classic. Even having spent full price I did tap the payment offsets and % loan.

Here's a newbie question about the R18. My understanding is that this motor requires a valve clearance check every 6k miles. If this has been missed by the previous owner, how detrimental is it to overall engine performance and life expectancy? Proper maintenance is always my first concern with buying used.

You'll hear it... The engine will sound like a millipede wearing tap shoes...

The adjustment is pretty straightforward, even if doing it for the first time..
