I believe it has to do with noise reduction more than anything else. They are operated by a servo motor and at low RPMs they remain slightly closed. It may help a little to provide back pressure. At higher RPM it will open up to allow more hot gases out. I don’t believe it will hurt the bike, however, you do need to install a servo buddy per pipe to trick the ECU otherwise you will have an error message in your TFT.

It will be slightly louder at idle basically. Not a lot, those valves are closed at idle and open progressively with throttle opening. You will hardly notice a difference. If you want to try without the servo buddies you can disconnect the cables. To do this you pull the covers exposing them under side of engine. very easy to do. There is a thread on this forum on the subject. i have purchased the servo buddies and removed the complete assembly along with the charcoal cannister also explained here on this forum. It cleans up the rear section of the bike alotthumbnail (37).jpg

I've been calling it a "Gate" or a "Flap' in all of my previous post; I assumed a Butterfly valve collapsed like a butterfly wing set..

I learn something every day, or I at least try to.

Yea the uses of the different valves makes sense, but the names of different valves never really made any sense to me. Except maybe a ball valve, because it at least looks like a ball. (I’m a pretty simple guy. Lol.)

"I would like to buy a new motorcycle to ride too, but I only have two dollars.”

Worse than the names of valves.

johndeeredr,
There are quite a few guys on this forum who have removed the exhaust valves. I saw it as a case of typical BMW over-engineering. There is one bolt that holds the unit onto the bottom of the bike. Remove the bolt and the system falls to the ground. You will have to release the 2 cables that are anchored to spring loaded pulleys. You also need to buy a pair of servo buddies. I got mine at JPcycles I think.
There are pics of this procedure if you search for this topic.
