I found the factory bags on the classic minimal. I could carry a laptop in 1 bag, maybe a hat and gloves in the other. They weren’t meant to get stuffed. This really cramped my ability to use the bike for business trips. Heck, I had my riding jacket in the right bag and the clip broke off...
I feel the luggage on the ‘classic’ is not sufficient for touring. You’ll end up with a huge bag strapped down. Plus side- it can be a back rest. Down side- limited placement for a tail bag without luggage rack
I owned a 2005 R1200gs. Put over 60k miles on it before I sold it it in 2017. Great bike after the fuel pump flange warranty swap. (If memory serves, it was prone to crack/ leak)
Don’t be scared of the servo brakes. Never had a problem.
I'm chasing to eliminate buffeting. if this was the silver bullet, I'd do it! Had wind buffeting on my 2017 Road king and gave up on the bike after 4 windshields and all the other stuff. Just couldn't get it as calm as the R1200GS.
