Finally found the culprit!
I haven’t posted in a while despite quite a bit happening, so here’s the latest.
As mentioned before, I’ve been using the iCarsoft MT V6 to monitor Component Group 1 voltage in real time (@Star-Lord it was something like ECU → Live Data → Component Group 1 → Wave was...
New OBD arrived today, selected the infamous Component Group 1 (as per 3A1112 fault) and started wiggling the wiring around the connectors I've checked/cleaned previously..
Nothing around the fuel pump / level wiring, nothing around the throttle body, fuse holder.. etc.
But what I said...
No wait, after disconnecting the trickle charger overnight I measured the voltage today, 12.36V measured with Ignition ON - but engine not running, if I start the engine I get 14.3-14.4V which should be correct.
Well I intended to ride the bike but.. fault came back.
Switched on, no errors, OBD showed No active DTCs still so I proceeded putting the last bits back so I can ride it, specifically:
Top engine covers
Side panels covering the Battery (L) and Relays (R)
Rectifier cover underneath, tidied up...
I was planning to go on a ride and see how it runs or if it throws any more errors under usage.
I'm a bit hesitant handing it back because it's not an official BMW dealer, so I kind of doubt their ability to properly troubleshoot newer BMWs because of their complexities.
Seeing that I can't...
Quick update on the 3A1112 saga, and an unexpected twist.
First, thanks everyone for the help. I realised my first post was over a month ago… definitely one of the most challenging troubleshooting exercises I’ve ever had on a motorbike.
Since my last post: On Saturday I spent another ~3 hours...
I can't seem to figure it out, here's what I've done so far:
Disconnected and cleaned contacts of:
4 Ignition Coils + swapped 2 new coils to test
4 Oxygen Sensors
2 Exhaust Servo Eliminators (actual servo is gone)
Crank Position Sensor
Cam Position Sensor
Fuel Pressure Sensor
Fuel Vent Valve...
Quick update on this issue, unfortunately still no luck.
The bike went to BMW Motorrad for around 2 hours of diagnostics/troubleshooting using ISTA. The main fault they've investigated was 3A1112 (Component Group 1 over-current) but surprisingly, their ISTA did not provide any more detail as to...
Got a call from my father, who’s got decent experience with cars and bikes. I told him about the issue and everything I’ve done so far.
Long story short, he had a go at me for riding on fuel reserve 😅 (that was the previous owner tho). His point was similar to @Mac re immersed pumps, they’re...
Looks like the B and TC variants are more prone to these errors in the wet - I am now drying mine after washing it so that water doesn't mess the electrics..
But the fact that your error cleared completely I think confirms that it's a temporary issue most likely caused by water ingress. I'd...
Cheers guys, I've had a look tracing the wiring but honestly couldn't see anything wrong - but again not taken apart the harness to check each wire inside. Will have another closer look tomorrow.
PS. Is there any active/electrical component in the fuel evap system?
Cheers @Star-Lord diagrams are helpful
@Ulrich I agree the connector under the tank is a bit of a pain, very fiddly but I'm aware of it, had it disconnected and cleaned before
Now I took a bit of a step back, was nearly convinced it was the fuel pump after the experiment I shared - so on...
Regarding the ESE: I disconnected them completely, cleared the codes, no change.
I started taking apart the top of the engine (air filter area), checked the camshaft sensor and the fuel‑pump connector. Cleaned both, reconnected, still no difference. When I cleared the codes earlier, I copied...
@Ulrich exhaust servos no longer there but using the Healtech ESE in place, this hasn't caused issues so far.
@jp R18T that's right I read about the coils on another BMW forum and had a pair of upper & lower coils (so one cylinder set) from another R18:
One by one I replaced each of the 4...
I've been taking stuff apart, I've cleaned connectors, contacts, fuse holders - error would not clear. I was able to delete most codes except for 2 which keep coming back:
P0659 / 3A1112
Some other forums mentioned this 3A1112 fault code apparently having to do with oxygen sensors and others...
Hmm switching the bike on after the batt was disconnected for half hour, the error was not showing - I thought the self-check must've cleared it? (I didn't clear the code because I wanted to see if it goes by itself after the fix)
And then as soon as the engine was running, the warning came up...
Update:
Cleaned the right-hand side fuses which are exposed and there was quite a bit of dirt + oxidization
Also cleaned the battery compartment which was full of mud and I was surprised to find the Negative terminal slightly loose on the battery?!
Battery was disconnected for about 30mins...
