I think that there are separate things that people are looking at. Mine does the same thing as David R's. It wants two tries. First try can crank several times with no start. Second time fires instantly always. I never really thought much about until this thread.

For me, I really didn't like the fish tail exhaust, so the regular FE wasn't something that I considered. Relative to the windscreen, the bike is great without it, and my screen is permanently off and stored in a closet. Both looks and from a buffeting perspective, the bike is better for me...

Cool pic cat. From the backgrounds in your pictures, your place looks really neat also. I've configured my classic with the same stripped down look. I also take off the lower bag bracket, exposing the entirety of the drive shaft. Makes more of a looks difference than you'd think...

What happens after 3000 miles (presumably per year)? Do they stop covering after that? Here in the US, they ask you what you will be using the bike for (and sometimes they ask for a yearly mileage estimate) but I've never heard of them actually keeping track of that.
