I use the steering lock and turn on the alarm. The bike is directly outside my front door and at night the porch lights illuminates it very well. We are in a low crime (not no crime) area. If the weather forecast includes rain I have a large cover for the machine and put that on too.

Easy to remedy by removing the pillion seat, and pegs ;)... cleans up the rear fender flow line, I believe.:)

I can't tell which model of R 18 you ride, but the Classic comes with a steering damper, stock. Perhaps a retrofit is a viable solution for you?
