Anyone install an aftermarket air filter?

With n.a. it is the ambient air pressure which feeds the pump.
More accurately the difference in pressure between the outside of the intake and the inside of the inlet tract.
The smaller the difference the better.
Any drop in pressure over any resistance in the inlet tract = drop in BMEP.
I like the engine to suck no more than necessary.
In the case of the R18 the intake is seriously restricted for reduction of induction noise. This is easily improved in one should want to.
Mine still sucks but noticeably less :cool:

* in performance engines the filling at max torque may be over110% so no sucking but charging by the mass x the high speed (E-kin) air column.

1) remove the 1800 plate from each side
2) remove the two obvious vertical screws from each side your can see after removing the 1800 plates
3) go to the lhs of the bike to remove the top half of the engine cover providing access to the filter. To do so, remove the grey side covers on each side by removing the two horizontal screws from the lhs that are just under the fuel tank. These hold the two sides together. (With the bike fully assembled you can see these with a flashlight. )

4). Yank out the plastic snorkels.

5) remove the 4 bolts holding down the filter assembly and pull out.

5) screw in dna assembly.

There is no ram effect through these snorkels. The intakes are located behind the front tire and then behind the breast plate. Super convoluted path. There is no clean air to ram anything. It is sucking.

3) my experience with snorkels like this is that when it is time to change your air filter you will be shocked that the only dirty part is right under the snorkel. Hence only about 5% of the filter area is being used for air intake with these.

The dna system is wide open. Yes it has vast more surface area, but I doubt the bike needs all of the area provided no matter what you do to the exhaust or fueling. (Simply conjecture). But more area is better than less in this set up.

When unscrewing the 4 intake cover screws, all 4 of the screw casings came out of the bottom air box. Any recommendations?

Not all of mine came out, 1 maybe 2. After the first one I was pretty careful. I think, it was a while ago, I just pushed them back in and screwed them down kinda tight.

Yes, that is a design flaw. Sometimes only one comes out but rarely none.
Glue them back in or simply delete the cover.

I had to use a nut as a back stop to screw the inserts back in. I coated them with jb weld, and then used antiseize on the screw. Hopefully they'll stay in next time I need to clean my filter.
