    Tube or Tubeless

Changed my front tyre after 5000mls with Outex conversion. No problems in all that time. Rear still going with no problems. The tape looks good still, and after refitting the new tyre, the pressure is holding as before. I was surprised at how much even the protective tape has stretched and...

I published my long-term review of my R18 Classic

A good review, though it should perhaps include something about the wind buffeting with the stock screen. I am also 6-3" and anythng above 65mph is eyeball rattling. There are all manner of cures. I use a screen deflector/extender, which reduces it. I have also found that with my particular...

Poll about Final Drive (Bevel Gear) Oil Spillage on the rim and tyre

Almost certainly grease. Was this event associated with hard riding and high air temperature? It happened to me on two occassions, the first coincided with air temp about 30 deg C. Eventually BMW took a look. First photo is the back of the bevel drive housing, its clean. If there was an...

Poll about Final Drive (Bevel Gear) Oil Spillage on the rim and tyre

Alf this is fanciful from your dealer. According to the photo you posted of your bike the deposits are coming from the gap between the bevel housing and the drive plate. For it to be "deposits" from the cush drive it would have to come from between the drive plate and wheel hub. Whilst the...

Poll about Final Drive (Bevel Gear) Oil Spillage on the rim and tyre

Didi can you tell us what has been the response from BMW headquarters since you reported the problem? Have you tried phoning BMW Assist and demanding that they recover the bike and provide you with a replacement until the matter has been fully investigated and resolved as it is a safety issue...

Poll about Final Drive (Bevel Gear) Oil Spillage on the rim and tyre

Noticed something like this when cleaning, though I did not think it was oil, more like black dust, I assumed cush drive rubber wear as it wipped off with a damp cloth. I have polled yes though as My initial thoughts may have been wrong. 09/21 bike with 5.5k ml. Due for srevice in two weeks...

Stone Circle Bike Rally who was there?

Saw a standard and TC at this meet today. Anyone from this forum? Great to see three R18s.

    Tube or Tubeless

My front wheel Outex tubeless conversion was successful with the first attempt. For the rear wheel, I removed a section of the taped rim either side of the leak, and applied Outex from a new kit on just this section. Mounted the tyre and too my dismay discovered a leak from a spoke on the...

    Chrome heat shield protection

Has anyone else experienced the mid exhaust heat shields getting scratches from boot heels, either from when pushing out the side-stand, or perhaps just from inadvertently resting on them when riding. Is there such a thing a a clear heat resistant tape that could be used to protect them? My...

    Tube or Tubeless

Have you done your front wheel yet? I tried laying down the 42mm tape in just a short section and found it to be too difficult. With my experience of the rear wheel and having to cut the sealing tape every 6-8 spokes, I decided to apply the same principle to the front wheel. As you know the...

    Tube or Tubeless

Another three hours prep, marking guidelines for the tape edges, grinding two out of every four spoke nipples, the ones that protrude by about 4.5mm, reducing them by a couple of mm to the same height as the others only on the front wheel. I used an angle grinder in the end as my Dremel gave up...

    Tube or Tubeless

My wheels are off and now unshod. Preping them for the Outex tubeless conversion. Which involved first washing with lots of detergent, then acetone to clean off residue from the inner tubes, then more washing. What I noticed was the water was beading as a result of some hydrophobic coating...

    Jack/Lift for the R18?

Thanks I appreciate the info and interesting lift. My point is that i was anticipating having to buy a secondary lift but now dont have to. I am happy working with the bike only slightly off the ground, and I can store a peice of plywood more easily in my crowded garage than another lift...

    Jack/Lift for the R18?

Hornig Kern Stabi lift is great and very stable but does not lift the rear high enough to be able to remove the rear wheel, even using the highest bolt hole for the legs - there are two. With a 18mm piece of plywood using just the rear lift on its own, you only have to remove the licence plate...

    Buffeting Beatdown

I agree there are an awful lot of variables specific to the rider, not just screen height - I would add; length of arms, helmet visor up or down, peak, pillion present or not. Almost pure luck if someone elses experience of a screen applies to you.
